WHAT IS A CHOLA ( XOLA )

The history of Cholas is a narrative steeped in resilience, community, and evolving identity, particularly within the Chicano and Mexican-American communities of the United States. The term "Chola" originally emerged as a subcultural identity among women in the Mexican-American barrios of the southwestern U.S. during the early to mid-20th century.

Cholas have been both admired and stigmatized. In their communities, they are often seen as symbols of strength and defiance, embodying the struggle of Hispanic women against marginalization. In the broader American cultural landscape, they have sometimes been misrepresented or misunderstood. However, through media and art, the image of the Chola has been reclaimed and celebrated as an icon of toughness and loyalty.
